A product containing 89% Vichy volcanic mineralizing water and hyaluronic acid (HA) improved signs and symptoms of rosacea as well as sensitive and reactive skin when given as an adjunct to standard management of these disorders, according to study results presented at the American Academy of Dermatology’s Virtual Meeting Experience (AAD VMX) 2021, held online from April 23 to April 25, 2021.

A total of 510 patients (mean age, 39.3±11.2 years) with rosacea/sensitive/reactive skin were included in this open-label, observational study. Patients used the Vichy volcanic mineralizing water and HA product, known as M89, once or twice per day for 4 weeks as an adjunct to standard therapy. Investigators compared signs and symptoms at baseline vs after 4 weeks.

Approximately half of patients (50.8%) were phototype 2, and 31.9% were phototype 3. The majority (64.9%) of patients reported having dry or very dry skin, with 81% of patients saying they considered their skin was insufficiently hydrated. As many as 78.2% of patients had erythema, 56.4% had desquamation, and 47.2% reported irritation. Patients scored their dryness as a 5.7±2.6 on a 0-to-10 scale. Participants also scored skin burning as a 3.6±2.8, itching as a 2.2±2.9, and stinging/tingling as a 3.1±2.7 on this scale.

The 4-week rate of erythema resolution or improvement was 68.2%. After 4 weeks of using the M89 product, desquamation resolved or improved in 82.1% of participants and irritation resolved or improved in 92.2%. In addition, dryness, burning, itching, and stinging/tingling scores significantly decreased by 65.9%, 80.6%, 68.8%, and 80.4%, respectively (all P <.0001). Approximately 77.9% had improvements in skin hydration. The majority of participants (98.4%) said they were satisfied with the texture of the M89 product. The investigators reported that tolerance to the product was excellent.
